چکیده

Abstract Three of the most recognizable corporate names are Microsoft, a manufacturer of computer software, and Google and Yahoo, two internet search providers. Two of the most popular soft drink brand names are Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola. This article proposes to use the sequences of English alphabet letters in the names of these companies and products as the basis for creating five new peptides, MICROSOFT, GOOGLE, YAHOO, COCACOLA, and PEPSICOLA. This can be done by using a modified version of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry’s one letter abbreviations for the names of amino acids. In this modification, the unassigned letter, O, is used to represent the amino acid, Ornithine. Precedent for this assignment already exists in the chemical literature. Ornithine does not occur in natural proteins, and, therefore, the letter, O, does not occur among the amino acid sequences of any protein database. However, Ornithine is structurally and chemically very similar to the amino acid, Lysine, which does occur in natural proteins and which is represented by the one letter abbreviation, K, in the IUPAC system. A search of the National Center for Biotechnology Information protein databases for the letter sequences, MICRKSKFT, GKKGLE, YAHKK, CKCACKLA and PEPSICKLA, where the one letter abbreviation, K, for Lysine, replaced the letter, O, returned numerous exact (GKKGLE and YAHKK) and partial (MICRKSKFT, CKCACKLA and PEPSICKLA) sequence matches. This result indicates that all of the search sequences are common in proteins. There are no synthetic barriers to the creation of these Ornithine containing peptides. Consequently, it is predicted that the synthetic peptides, MICROSOFT, GOOGLE, YAHOO, COCACOLA, and PEPSICOLA, will all exhibit biological activities.

COCACOLA: binning metagenomic contigs using sequence COmposition, read CoverAge, CO-alignment and paired-end read LinkAge

Motivation The advent of next-generation sequencing technologies enables researchers to sequence complex microbial communities directly from the environment. Because assembly typically produces only genome fragments, also known as contigs, instead of an entire genome, it is crucial to group them into operational taxonomic units (OTUs) for further taxonomic profiling and down-streaming functiona...

Reassessing the “think Global, Act Local” Mandate: Evaluation and Synthesis

There is no simple formula for developing and implementing successful business strategies across national borders. A popular approach to this challenge is to “think global, act local.” Some argue, however, that maximum consistency across global markets is critical, citing examples such as CocaCola, whose emphasis on quality, brand recognition, and a small world theme has been successful in a nu...

Environmental Risk and Bioremediation of Hexachlorocyclohexane Isomers

Pesticide residues in Indian agricultural soils due to extensive and sometimes indiscriminate use still pose a serious problem for the production and export of agricultural goods. Residues of pestcides including HCH (hexachlorocyclohexane) have even been detected in popular soft drinks such as CocaCola and Pepsi. In addition, at pesticide production sites, soils of the surrounding area are ofte...

For the first time in 23 years, PepsiCo eschewed the ‘‘biggest marketing day of the year’’ and did not advertise during the 2010 Super bowl [1,2]. Instead, it launched the Pepsi Refresh Project, a social media cause marketing campaign. The campaign signaled a landmark turn in soda marketing, using cutting-edge social media techniques [3] to spread word-ofmouth buzz and elicit online nominations...
